Human trafficking in Maryland
Human trafficking experts say it is difficult to determine exactly how many victims of human trafficking there are in Maryland since the crime is hidden. Many social service experts define it as a form of human slavery.
At ‘Turnaround’, a sexual assault center in Baltimore, they help as many as 200 victims a year. Rachel Sye explained, "we provide emergency shelter services, basic needs when they come into our program"
Jeanne Allert, Founder of ‘Samaritan Women’, explained they provide long term residential treatment for victims of human trafficking.
She said, "these are not prostitutes, these are not the bad girls these are girls that have had very rough lives since they were children. "
