'It's the worst pain': Grief flows at vigil for 13-year-old Middle River murder victim

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (WBFF) - A Baltimore County mother is desperate for answers after someone shot and killed her 13-year-old daughter in Middle River.

Police were called to a 7-Eleven on Peterson Road just before midnight Monday night.

Investigators said Iyanna Watkins, 13, and two adult men were shot when a gunman opened fire on a group of people sitting behind the convenience store.

Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Both adult men were taken to a nearby hospital. There is no word on their conditions.

On Tuesday, friends, neighbors and family gathered behind the convenience store for a prayer vigil. It was then Iyanna's mother made an emotional plea anyone with any information on her daughter's murder to come forward.

"Lord, please, I ask that they show up and show out. Give me guidance. Give me peace and help my heart. Thank ya'll for coming out and supporting my baby," cried Chanel Gaskins, Iyanna's mother.

Police believe the gunman fired the shots from a nearby alley and quickly left the scene.

No arrests have been made.

In terms of a motive, investigators said they believe the shooting was targeted and they're looking into the possibility an earlier altercation with another group, sparked the shooting.

Iyanna's aunt and cousin, Angela Faidley-Shorts, lives nearby and told Fox 45 she heard the gunshots and, a short time later, rushed to the scene.

"These past hours have been a nightmare that you don't wake up from," said Faidley-Shorts. "It's a nightmare. It's the worst pain of worst feeling you could ever imagine. We're talking about a 13-year-old little girl."

Iyanna's aunt said the family is left heartbroken and with many unanswered questions, including who did this and why.

For now, they are leaning on faith and one another and remembering a young girl just weeks from entering high school.
