Sam's Club in Owings Mills closes down, giving employees and customers little notice

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (WBFF) -- On the same day Wal-Mart announces pay raises and bonuses for employees, the company also unexpectedly closed 63 of its Sam's Club stores across the country.

The closures include the Owings Mills Sam's Club on Reisterstown Road.

"We just came down from New York, trying to go shopping, get gas," said Al Horowitz.

"I came up to get some lamb chops and they're closed," said Omar Crosby.

One by one customers are finding out the store is closed for good.

"That's shocking," said Horowitz. "And this one is always crowded, so it doesn't make sense, really."

Security guards are stationed at the door.

Only pharmacy customers are being allowed inside.

A sign on the door says the pharmacy will close permanently January 26th.

"I feel sorry for people who lost their jobs," Crosby said.

One woman sent us pictures she took while picking up her prescription.

Kleenex boxes are set out on store tables.

Employees are just finding out about the abrupt closure.

"Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world and here they are closing stores and laying off employees with no advanced notice," said Baltimore County executive Kevin Kamenetz.

He says 169 workers at the Owings Mills Sam's Club are out of jobs.

In total, about 10,000 American workers are affected by the 63 closures announced Thursday.

Those closures come at the exact same time Walmart announced it's raising starting salaries and offering bonuses up to $1,000 for all employees, including those affected by the Sam's Club closures.

Baltimore County plans to help those now looking for work.

For Sam's Club shoppers wondering about their paid membership, the company is telling people to contact the company directly for a refund or use it at another Sam's Club in the Baltimore metro.
