Pay it Forward: Melody's Heart
FOX45 and Cancer Treatment Centers of America are helping Maryland's unsung heroes continue to make a difference in the community.
All year round, using donations and her own money, Melody Smith provides basic necessities to children and families in need; toothpaste, socks, clothes...things that she at one time couldn't provide for herself.
"I couldn't make ends meet for my four children," Melody said, describing her struggle as a single mother, just trying to survive.
Twenty-four years ago she saw others' hardship, and it pulled on her heartstrings.
"People in children and group homes, emergency shelters were doing without," Melody said. "There was no Christmas there was no Easter."
So she started Melody's Heart. This past Easter Melody delivered more than 300 Easter baskets to children in shelters and group homes.
"Teenagers who receive melt my heart," Melody says. "They can get a brand new pair of socks and stand there and cry because they got a new pair of socks---or a 7 year old seeing a $50 baby doll and seeing a hair brush screaming, 'I got a hair brush,' because she's not going to be bullied in school because her hair ain't brushed because she lives in a shelter."
She says it's a joy that she understands.
"It's amazing that the love that these kids and these families show when they receive something as simple as a hair brush or a box of toothpaste and we take that for granted that we can brush our teeth every day," Melody says. "Sometimes these kids aren't brushing their teeth, not at all."
